Education
Education in Somalia had long been in a state of crisis due to neglect and lack of resources. Extensive destruction and looting of school facilities during the civil war completed the process of disruption (UNESCO, 2003). In the societal chaos following the fall of Siad Barre in early 1991, schools ceased to exist for all practical purposes. In 1990, however, the system had four basic levels--preprimary, primary, secondary, and higher education. The government controlled all schools, private schools having been nationalized in 1972 and Quranic education having been made an integral part of schooling in the late 1970s. Despite the general devastation in Somalia and the absence of central authority, local communities mobilized themselves to take the initiative of the rehabilitation and reopening of the schools and participate in formulation and implemention of the strategies to meet the goals and objectives of the emergency education proagrammes for primary school children.
According to recent UNESCO Strategic Objective, a gross enrollment ratio of 25% (20% for girls) by the end of 2004 in accordance with the adopted minimum standards of quality primary education should be implemented.
The organisation has established and funds seven community schools and one TB Center following Villages and towns: Galkacyo, Eel-gula, Wisil, Docol, Galbaraqo, Saddex Higlo, wich located southern Mudug Somalia..
We focus on strengthening teacher training, improving learning conditions increasing community participation in school management and development plans, and strengthening the management and planning capacity of the school committees. This will enable educational managers to develop budgets and to learn how to monitor performance so that they can manage their school systems without reliance on the international aid community.
Eel-Gula school is the first school which the organisation has built in these area and it become as a pilot project for other education and rehabilition activities.
The school has a total of 175 students which includes different ages,
sex and economic background (see Photo and Table 1).The school has 6 classes, 1 office which is equiped with computers and other office tools; two toalets and water container with capacity of 200 litres of water.
The education and water availability
has benefited by a population of circa 10.000 in Elgula and surroundings. The last three years, the town has grown 40% of its inhabitants which is related to the availability of public services such as education, water, health, electricity. In addition, all these opportunities created new hope for the population and their future development.
